Colossal cave adventure walkthrough9/12/2023 ![]() ![]() If you look at it without that lens, you get a rather plain and sometimes frustrating adventure game that could perhaps get a pass if it was very nice to look at – which it absolutely is not. It works if you look at it as a new version of a historical text. The narration in the game is spoken like the text in the original, giving it that text adventure feel. You can play the 2023 Colossal Cave and go ‘look, you can pick up items and put them in your inventory, this game popularised that,’ like you’re going through a museum exhibit. While I know those games are still kicking around today and there’s some good and innovative stuff coming from that scene, they can be hard to understand at first if you’re more attuned to modern games. It’s certainly easier for players to get into than a text parser adventure. You see, in one way, Colossal Cave succeeds in what it sets out to do – offer a more accessible way to play an old game that helped shape the medium. In fact, I would say you absolutely need the context, because, without it, you're playing a new indie first-person adventure game that is not particularly good. It’s hard not to look at the new 3D version of Colossal Cave without that context. That is a very brief history behind the game I am reviewing here. Now, 25 years after Roberta’s final game for Sierra, King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity, the Williams’ (aged 68/69) have come out of game dev retirement and gone back to their roots by remaking the 48-year-old ground zero for adventure games. Williams’ first game, 1980’s Mystery House for the Apple II, is credited as being the first graphical adventure game. It inspired her to make her own adventure games. Roberta and Ken Williams’ video game journey started with a teletype edition of Colossal Cave. Neither of these men stuck with games, preferring to stay with computer programming, but their work was an important early step toward the world of video games we know today. Eventually, Don Woods (also not a big name) made some important additions, and other savvy programmers would port it to newer computers with monitors. To play the game, you would type your command and the text would print out as you went. Notice I didn’t say video game, because to begin with, Colossal Cave Adventure was programmed in 1975 on a PDP-10 mainframe computer, and you played the game by using a teletype because monitors weren’t standard yet. Programmer and spelunking enthusiast Crowther designed the original version of Colossal Cave Adventure (also known as just Adventure), which was the first popular adventure game and piece of interactive fiction. ‘Who created the first text adventure game?’ to be more precise. Will Crowther is not a household name, he’s really more of a trivia question. They’re rightly considered part of the game developer Pantheon but could potentially walk through the PAX floor unnoticed. They left the games industry and settled into semi-retirement. Ken and Roberta left Sierra in 19 respectively, jumping ship before the whole thing sank. The reason CUC could offer so much was that they were greatly overestimating their income and eventually were caught in what is one of the biggest accounting scandals ever. It was an offer too good to be true, so they took it. Sierra Online imploded rather dramatically when CUC International, a huge conglomerate, bought them out for $1 billion in stock. Roberta’s King’s Quest series was the leader in graphical point-and-click adventures until Lucasarts took things a step further in the 90s. Their company, Sierra On-Line, was one of the biggest names in PC games in the 80s. To call Roberta Williams the godmother of adventure games isn’t hyperbole. ![]() It’s hard to overstate the influence this couple has had on the games industry. Roberta and Ken Williams are good examples of this. ![]() What I’m getting at here, is that video games are old enough that some of the pioneers of the industry and their games are largely forgotten, especially if they haven’t stayed in the public eye. The young, brash game and console designers interviewed in Atari 50 are now in their seventies. And they’re not 50 in the same way that Nintendo is 133 years old or Sega is 62 - they didn’t start with playing cards or coin-operated machines, they started with video games. Last year, Atari turned 50, and they threw a big party to celebrate (by party, I mean an excellent compilation game/retrospective). They’re always seen as the young upstart in the world of entertainment, but that young upstart is middle-aged now. ![]()

Best dim sum in philadelphia9/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Salt and pepper wings at David's Mai Lai Wah It's possible, and my hope, that we were we were actually served the regular wings by accident. What really irked me was calling them spicy since not even a small hint of spice was detectable. The dumplings are actually about as addicting as stale fortune cookies. We won’t be going back for more is all you need to know.ĭavid's spicy salt and pepper fried chicken wings had a nice crunch and were full of meat, but nowhere near the Korean-style wings at Sammy Chon’s or Dim Sum Garden. Philly Magazine's statement that the "pork dumplings with ginger scallion sauce are more addictive than crack, heroin and crystal meth combined" is attention grabbing, but not much else. The verdict for David’s Mai Lai Wah was not nearly as good, especially the famed dumplings. If you are in the mood for something more doughy and substantial, the Triple Steamed Buns filled with scrambled egg and chive are a good choice. Fried to a crisp, the Chicken Wings were just how I like them, though Kristy was more a fan of the light, airy shrimp dumplings. The Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Juice Buns were great, but did not generate the same OMG-this-is-amazing reaction as the thinner, steamed soupy buns last time. On our second trip, we upped our order to four items off the dim sum menu, and that proved to be a hearty Sunday afternoon meal. Shanghai Steamed Pork Juicy Buns (Soup Dumplings) Order more than that cause you'll want them. The total cost was less than $15, including tip. The only drawback was we only ordered four. On our first trip, we also ordered the Shanghai SiuMai, which we remembered from our SF stop. The soupy interior was like magic in your mouth. The Shanghai Steamed Pork Juicy Buns were the highlight. Dim Sum Garden wasn’t trying to be all things to everyone. Many of the other customers at Dim Sum Garden were regulars who knew the menu and the servers were also quick to give recommendations. The grimy, unpretentious location underneath the Hilton Garden Inn's overpass on 11th Street gives the place a feeling of authenticity, though it's not a traditional dim sum restaurant where they come around with carts and you point to your picks. We've already been back there a second time, and plan to return regularly. We’re not dim sum aficionados, but Dim Sum Garden was more than satisfying. We decided to check out Dim Sum Garden after several of our Twitter friends recommended it, as well as David’s Mai Lai Wah after Philadelphia Magazine’s glowing dumpling review in 2011. The experience inspired us to go on a recent dim sum hunt in Philadelphia. You should make Chinatown a stop on any SF trip. Check out some pics on our Pinterest board. We highly recommend both Delicious Dim Sum and Good Mang Kok in SF if you’re looking for dim sum to go. We had never tried any dim sum places in Philly before then so we could not compare. Our recent post comparing top spots in Philadelphia to San Francisco did not mention our trip to SF’s Chinatown for some awesome dim sum and dumplings. Update: Dim Sum Garden has moved to a new, more spacious and modern location at 10th and Race. ![]()

Cheap tube amp9/12/2023 ![]() ![]() I have designed and built many tube amps over the years from push-pull ultra linear to single-ended triode, using home-wound transformers. Luckily, the HT fuse did its job and no further damage occurred. I am pleased to say that, during the eight years since I built this amplifier, only one fault has occurred, which was an internal short-circuit in one of the output tubes. This gave 0.14% THD at 2W with an 8Ω load without feedback, or 0.007% with 26dB feedback. I could only measure the distortion without feedback (by injecting the signal directly into the grid of the input tube) because the distortion with feedback was less than that of the signal generator. If you can increase the load to between 40 and 100Ω, then you can easily obtain 50W of pure class A power. This enables the amplifier to deliver 25W into an 8Ω load or 40W into a 16Ω load, such as my full-range reflex-port loaded Lowthers. The obvious choice of output tube was the Russian designed 6C33C triode, because a single pair can deliver 2.5A into an 8Ω load from a moderate 150V rail. The simplest way to reduce the feedback to 11dB is to omit the coupling capacitors between the first and second stages.įinally, in order to drive normal loudspeakers, I decided that I needed a power rating of at least 20W. However, the advantage of a DIY amplifier is that you can adjust the feedback to suit your own taste. I have applied 26dB of feedback, which is a similar amount to most classic tube designs and sets the output impedance to 0.4Ω for well-controlled bass. However, zero feedback in this design would result in audible noise and an output impedance of 8Ω, which would severely affect the tonal balance of most loudspeakers. I know that signal feedback is a controversial issue and there are those who maintain that the ultimate goal should be 0dB. Similarly, the DC bias needs hardly any adjustment over time. To this end, I incorporated ample loop DC feedback, which - after initial adjustment - keeps the offset voltage within 20mV between tube replacements. In a long-tailed pair, the supply current is virtually DC so that the power supply is effectively removed from the signal path.Ībove all, I wanted a stable, reliable design that would not need constant readjusting. Push-pull amplification not only cancels even harmonic distortion, but also provides good rejection of power supply ripple. The pentodes provide the current drive as well as greater voltage swing than triodes.Ī general aim of the design was to have as simple a circuit as possible with a minimal number of components in the signal path as well as push-pull operation throughout (Fig. This configuration has more in common with the Futterman circuit 2, except that a long-tailed pair of pentodes is used for the driver stage instead of the concertina phase splitter. Instead, I designed a non-complementary totem-pole output stage using a novel combination of local feedback and current drive in order to achieve good symmetry and cancellation of even harmonics, as confirmed in subsequent measurements. One option was to adopt the “circlotron” circuit1, which was invented by Cecil Hall in 1951, but that precluded the use of natural current limiting and would have greatly complicated the power supply configuration. Another problem was how to realize a symmetrical output stage when tubes do not come as complementary NPN and PNP pairs as with transistors. First, in order to protect the loudspeakers in the event of a fault, it needed to be naturally current limiting without using auxiliary protection circuits. However, this concept is not easy to realize in practice, otherwise there would be more of these around. ![]() An alternative is the output transformer-less (OTL) tube amplifier. Hence, a lot of iron and copper are required in order to minimize these problems. ![]() Also, the winding resistance typically wastes 10% of the output power. The main causes of this are iron core saturation distortion and the winding inductance which bypasses the loudspeaker at low frequencies. Photo 1: Front View of the author's original OTL amplifier. ![]()

Microcosm carl zimmer9/11/2023 ![]() ![]() The scientists allowed the bacteria to grow and reproduce for hundreds of generations in this bizarro world. But now a rise in temperature was followed 40 minutes later by a rise in oxygen, not a drop. They periodically raised and lowered both the oxygen levels and the temperature in flasks of E. To test that possibility, the scientists turned E. coli has to switch to a low-oxygen program whenever it defends itself against high temperatures. Unless the oxygen is going to drop soon, this would be a disastrous decision. coli is bathing in a broth rich in oxygen. This switch is remarkable when you consider that it can happen while E. coli gets warm, it not only switches on heat-defense genes, but also starts making the switch to low-oxygen genes. coli, keeping careful track of which genes were turned on and off when they tweaked the temperature and oxygen levels. To find out, they experimented on some E. coli might use it as a cue to start to prepare for the change. coli has to shut down the network of genes it uses to metabolize sugar with the help of oxygen, and then switch on hundreds of other genes for feeding without oxygen.Ī sudden rise in temperature is a reliable signal that oxygen will start to drop over the next few hours. Later, as it moves from your mouth down through your gut, the level of oxygen in its environment will drop to near zero. ![]() It immediately gets a lot warmer, for one thing. coli that’s just arrived in your mouth, the world begins to change. Just remember, don’t eat raw cookie dough!) For the E. (Fortunately, the vast majority of these bacteria are totally harmless. coli carried from your hands to your mouth. The Princeton scientists started by considering E. It may not have a brain made up of billions of cells, but it does have a complex network of genes that might be able to use information to make predictions about things to come. (Think of Pavlov’s dogs, drooling at the sound of the dinner bell.) That led scientists at Princeton to wonder whether E. In fact, thanks to our brains, we can learn new signals. So-called “higher” species, like us, can also respond to signals of things to come. coli is responding to something that’s already present in its environment. coli producing a lot of lactose-digesting proteins. If it should encounter lactose, however, the sugar molecule can pull away the repressing proteins, initiating a series of events that leads to E. But most of the time, it keeps the genes for those proteins shut down. coli can make proteins that allow it to feed on lactose, the sugar in milk. coli‘s genes switch on and off is well-suited to its particular kind of life. In later years, scientists discovered this basic on-off strategy at work (with lots of variations, of course) in the DNA of all living things. One of the most important chapters in the history of modern biology was the discovery of these switches in E. (Likewise, other proteins can clamp onto other stretches of DNA and speed up the reading of genes as well.) When those proteins fall off, or are pried away, the genes can be switched on. Proteins can clamp onto stretches of DNA near certain genes, for example, making it impossible for the microbe to read them and make the corresponding proteins. coli turns some genes on and keeps others turned off, a bit like playing the keys of a piano. That would not only be a spectacular waste of energy. But it does not use all those genes to make proteins and RNA molecules all at once. coli has 4000-odd genes, which it can use in various combinations to meet the many challenges it faces. It may even be able to predict the future.Į. Yet I may have underestimated the brainless intelligence of E. It can build microbial cities out of goo, and even commit suicide to help its fellow E. It can survive starvation by folding its DNA into a crystalline sandwich and powering down for months, even years in some cases. It can protect itself from overheating by making just enough protective proteins it needs, with thermostat-like precision. It can navigate away from the bad and towards the good. It can can build intricate tails which it can then spin hundreds of times a second in order to swim. It can survive in frozen soils and stomach acid. ![]() In my book Microcosm (which has just come out in paperback), I took great pleasure in all the things that something as tiny as E. ![]()

If you're an intermediate or advanced experienced editor, I wouldn't recommend this software, as it will probably just stop your workflow and won't meet your needs. It'll be gone forever. ![]() CONSĬamtasia is very simple, the features that make it an excellent video editor make it a software that doesn't meet the needs of all the projects we may have in mind, not to mention the post-production of some long footage, we couldn't get something elaborate with the native resources of this video editor. In my opinion, this is a very good first video editor for those who want to enter the world of post-production and audiovisual development, its price is accessible and that is exactly what makes this my first suggestion to any beginner. PROSĬamtasia is a really simple video editor, I like how it works, I like what it can do, but above all, I like that it leaves you to create videos in such simple and easy ways, Camtasia seems to be focused on the beginner user, or the one who wants to do simple and good quality videos. The price is very affordable and I highly recommend this video editor if you want to create school projects or aimed at a work group, from there on out it would not be the best option. I like Camtasia to edit and create simple videos focused on brands and students because it allows us to create interesting and didactic audiovisuals, this video editor fulfills that function very well, but when developing a major production project, I would not even bother to open this software, because I know previously it will not help me. ![]() |
